Manager, Employee & Labor Relations

The Manager, Employee & Labor Relations will assist in the administration of the organization's employee and labor relations programs, policies, and procedures. Ensuring that quality, consistent and strategically aligned advice is provided throughout the business.

A major accountability of this role will be to manage selected union contracts for the organization. In addition, the role will participate, investigate, and apply a case management model to the complex and difficult cases in the areas of employee and labor relations while providing guidance in these areas to HR colleagues at the local level. The role has a responsibility to provide leadership and deep expertise to support business and HR colleagues.

The Manager will partner with the Senior Director, Employee & Labor Relations and business leaders to develop and implement key change management actions and services to improve employee and business performance.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Labor Relations

  • As required manages the collective bargaining process, which includes coordinating with local management teams and senior leadership on bargaining strategy and proposal creation, costing the impact of proposal made during negotiations, and where applicable acting as lead negotiator for the company
  • Administers and interprets collective bargaining agreements and non-union work agreements as appropriate
  • Represent DFA in grievance, arbitration, and NLRB matters partnering with legal and outside counsel as necessary
  • Establishes and maintains professional relationships with union leadership at represented company locations

Operational Support and Employee Relations

  • Provides leadership, consultation, and guidance to HR colleagues and business leaders on employee relations and collective bargaining agreement issues, at all locations
  • Manages escalated employee relations issues
  • Monitor and administer laws governing employment, wages, hours, discrimination, paid time off, etc., as appropriate
  • Formulate, recommend, and administer policies that meet company objectives and comply with State and Federal laws relating to discrimination, harassment, and any other local, state, or federal ordinances
  • Research and investigate complex employee and labor issues and, if necessary, coordinate efforts with HR Business Partners, Legal, or outside counsel
  • Respond to plant inquiries and advise management on a variety of employee and labor relations issues such as employee/supervisor conflicts, employee discipline, and employee terminations ensuring consistency across the organization
  • Develop systems, processes, procedures that result in optimal effectiveness of the ER/LR team, specifically around intake, assignment, and tracking of employee relations inquiries
  • Help develop the capabilities of HR professionals across the organization through training, guidance, and evaluation
  • Assist local Plant leadership/HR on creating positive work environments

LR/ER Strategy

  • Contributes to the development of the ER/LR strategy for DFA

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in human resource management, LR/ER, business or related field
  • 5+ years of progressive HR experience with extensive experience in labor and employee relations
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment is highly desirable

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent knowledge of Human Resources practices; working knowledge of HR related laws and regulations
  • Must possess considerable knowledge of management-labor relations; the principles, practices, and procedures of Human Resources Management.
  • Strong negotiation skills, communication skills, problem solving skills, leadership skills, ability to manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Must have the ability to plan, coordinate, and direct the work of others.
  • Experience conducting employment related investigations
  • Solid analytical skills and ability to understand the business context and strategy

Licensing and Certification:

  • Law Degree preferred
  • PHR/SPHR preferred.
