Summary

The Mechanical Engineer III role is an experienced level position responsible for performing and coordinating design, development, evaluation, analysis, and/or quality control functions on complex engineering projects. Other expectations include developing solutions to technical problems by applying advanced mathematical, physical science, and engineering technologies.  This role will be in the Purchased Product Engineering organization where we manage outside vendors producing ~70% of the plant’s components.  As part of the Mechanical Assembly & Hardware Product Engineering team, you will be responsible for a large amount of project management, coordination, communication and bridging multiple teams to coordinate competing priorities as our vendors produce high quality designs on time.  Identifying the technical solutions to production issues of these vendors, supporting our design teams to ensure producibility, and continually looking for ways to improve the processes and technology are all key responsibilities for this role.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Designs and/or develops new products/processes, special instruments, and unique equipment to meet specific requirements of customer orders. 
  • Develops and assesses production or inspection operations and sequences, equipment, tooling gages, or acceptance equipment and processing methods required to manufacture or inspect complex components and assemblies. 
  • Estimates set-up times, operating times, and flowtimes, as well as production and acceptance need. 
  • Plans and performs engineering testing and development programs and uses advanced statistical and scientific methods to address and resolve engineering and production problems and to assure product manufacturability. 
  • Assesses designs for manufacturability to assure designs can be produced. 
  • Interacts with design agencies and suppliers to assist in resolving design, development, production, and acceptance issues. 
  • Assesses and prepares evaluation reports, analyzes discrepancies, makes recommendations for and initiates the most cost-effective improvements for product, test equipment, procedures, and manufacturing or operating processes that improve productivity and quality and reduce flowtime. 
  • Provides project leadership and technical guidance on complex engineering projects. 

You Must Have

  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time 
  • Ability to work remote, hybrid, or on-site as directed by management and is determined by the needs of the business 
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an ABET accredited program in Engineering or Physics 
  • 4+ years of relevant experience in engineering, analytical, or related technical activities 
  • United States Citizenship 
  • Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this job 
  • Ability to obtain and maintain, if required for position, a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance (some positions require additional DOE designations)
