History of KC Female Impersonators
Did you know that there are references to female impersonation in Kansas City that pre-date the Civil War? Or that drag queens were a large part of the “wide open” experience during the Pendergast era? That Kansas City had a nightclub that was known nationally for its “femme mimics”? Come discover an unexplored aspect of Kansas City’s rich theatrical tradition at Kansas City Museum’s October Community Curator Speaker Series Tuesday, October 23rd at 6:30 p.m. at Union Station.* “From Blackface to Toilet Paper Rolls: the Surprising History of Female Impersonation in Kansas City” has been developed from the collections in the Gay and Lesbian Archive of Mid-America, and is sure to tell a story about Kansas City you haven’t heard before!
*The Community Curator Speakers Series for October will be held in the Town Hall meeting room located next to the Extreme Screen on Level B.
